Train Station

Devonport Symphony

A HARMONISED STATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF DEVONPORT.

As cities grow with greater populations and become smarter, the train stations must adapt alongside to be smarter, have greater value and meaning to the city, community and it’s residents beyond an essential function of arrival and departure for a singular mode of transport. Improving connectivity to public transport in the area will reduce reliance on cars to help tackle climate change.

As the new heart of Devonport, the station will become a social hub for the local community and a welcoming point of arrival to visitors, bringing together the segregated communities of Devonport.

HARMONY OF ALL COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS

Community segregation was identified as a key weakness in SWOT analysis of Devonport, with divisions between local residents and Babcock commuter-workers who arrive by train and do not interact with the area. Local students also passively walk through the park to and from school or college.

The train station aims to bring these communities together in harmony and to engage with the green spaces by bringing improved transport links for convenience with the green spaces to benefit their health and well-being.

Everyone should be heard

With significant segregation, heightened by two separate train stations that divide Babcock commuter-workers from locals, the new station will bring everyone together. Designed around a central core that allows sound from all levels to travel around the building, as each individual’s presence and use of the space is to be valued, symbolic of every person’s voice needing to be heard in the community of Devonport. The performance space is for all, whether a busker or a local performance from the Soapbox Theatre.
